Born during the second world war in Windsor, Ontario, Pat started his independence very early in life. He and his father headed to the Yukon right after his graduation, and later the rest of the family joined them and began a new chapter of their lives. Pat chose to write Born Lucky for his family, to show a side of his life that was different than most would visualize. This shows a side of life before all of the fears of today set in, before social media, before universities and degrees were the waterlines for success, but rather Grade 12 and in some case, Grade 10 was the goal set for a lot of students. This was a time when parents ruled, and for the most part, children listened or there was a price to pay. Kids were kids and the majority of them enjoyed their adolescence. A different era, a different time, a once in a lifetime experience. An epic tale that the kids of today will have a chance to tell their family – eighty years from now.

“As we were hitchhiking, we were choosing our rides carefully, not taking any short-haul rides, turning down any that weren’t going straight through to Whitehorse.”
