Excerpt from Building Family Ties: A Story of Youth by A Man Long In the Tooth by John Paton:

โ€œAfter moving to Churchbride, I wasnโ€™t long in discovering at the ripe age of 11, that money was in high demand and in short supply.

I had met and befriended a senior in the community (I think he was 16 or so at the time) that informed me the way to earn a little cash in that area was to start a trap line.

I sat with great interest while he proceeded to explain what it took to be a trapper. I went home that night and mentally became one of the greatest trappers Saskatchewan had ever had.

There was a time when I had so many furs at the end of the week that I would have to get help just to carry them to the fur trader.

Before the great one got started though, I had to get a trapperโ€™s license and that meant I had to find $2. At a penny per bottle, that would mean finding 200 beer bottles, which took over two weeks to come up with.

The next problem was how to get traps. I soon found this was a much bigger problem, but nothing was going to stop me now.

A visit to my grandfatherโ€™s farm and a little begging got me two steel leg traps perfect catching weasels and with luck possibly a mink or two.โ€
