Excerpt from Juno Beach Survivor by R.I Ketcheson:
“Lieutenant-General Sir Brian Herrocks, a renowned British corps commander during World War 2, remarked that in an aver- age group of ten fighting men, “two are leaders, seven followers, and one doesn’t want to be there” (Herrocks). My father would probably be the soldier who didn’t want to be there.
Earl recalled telling his younger brother, Russell, that officers must lead scouting patrols. This information was enough to save Russell’s life when an officer asked him to lead a patrol. Remembering his brother’s advice, he told the officer that he could not lead the patrol because he was not an officer. The officer was later killed leading the patrol.”
