The purpose of this booklet is to provide a reference and guide for Canadian milk bottle collectors, relating to the companies in Canada and the U.S. who made milk bottles for use by dairies and creameries in Western Canada. The focus of the booklet is the manufacturers’ names and marks. I have not attempted to write a history of the glass manufacturers. Others (e.g. T.B. King and Gerald Stevens for Canada and J.H. Toulouse for the U.S.A.) have done an excellent job in that regard. Nor have I attempted to delve into mould marks or production date marks that appear on some milk bottles. Miller and Jorgensen of Parks Canada for mould marks, and T.B. King for the production date marks, have covered those topics. The four main sources I have accessed for useful information are:

  • Bottle Makers and Their Marks by Julian Harrison Toulouse – 1971
  • Udderly Delightful – 2nd edition by John Tutton – 1994
  • The Cherry-Burrell General Supply Catalog #534 – 1934
  • Glass in Canada by Thomas B. King – 1987

I hope that the reader finds the booklet to be useful. When I finally assembled this material, it answered many of my question as to who made which milk bottles, and questions regarding the various manufacturers’ marks.
