Description

In Western Canada in the ’40s and ’50s, 70% of kids grew up in small prairie towns. These towns had loosely enforced but definite standards for morality, truth and honesty. Among other personal traits, these developed in a Disney Land type atmosphere.
Kids were allowed to build their own fun atmosphere from the ideas and resources available. The results were a rollicking, joyful, non stop smorgasbord of activities.
After reading Mischief at its Best, those who did not grow up in the ’40s and ’50s will wish they had.

An Invitation to IntimacyThis isn’t a how-to manual to be a better Christian; it’s an invitation to partner with the Holy Spirit to rediscover the heart of the Father, unlearn old lies and habits, and grow where he’s asking you to grow - putting off the old, putting on the new, and celebrating the gift of Christ in us, the hope of glory. The gospel isn’t just good news, it’s the best news, and the “gears” each point to the desire of God to make his home in us and work with us to reconcile all things to himself. If you want to fix your life, this isn’t the book; but if you want to know God more deeply and fall in love with him again, do yourself and the world a favour by reading this and giving Jesus your Yes!

Unexpected and UndeservedHow much can one couple go through? As Margo shared her life I couldn't help but be humbled by her and Ray’s dedication, devotion and trust in the Lord. Unexpected and Undeserved is a book about triumph in the midst of gut wrenching pain. It’s about knowing that our Lord has a plan and having the Faith that He will see it through. I would strongly recommend that anyone who is experiencing the trauma of this world or anyone who wonders how some people survive, …… read this book.

A firmly grounded approach to better ranchingIn Ranching Like a 12-Year-Old, Tom Krawiec has given us a straightforward guide to ranching without all the fluff that tends to fill the pages of most ranching and grazing guides. Tom draws on his considerable experience to give practical tips as to what he considers the ideal grazing system, how he likes to set up his watering sites, build fence, feed throughout winter, and move animals, etc.

If you've grown weary of reading the same regenerative talking points over and over, extrapolated theories from cherry-picked studies and idealistic anecdotes, you'll find Tom's approach to be a breath of fresh air. Put simply, if you're managing your grazing to where you're doubling or tripling your grass production, you're probably regenerating that land as quickly and cheaply as possible.

Ranching Like a 12-Year-Old is a staple for every rancher's library.

Outstanding book. A Must-ReadTom nailed the topic of simplified ranching. I am starting out at 55 so making things simple for my wife and the occasional helper makes profitable regenerative ranching possible for owners who have a full-time, off-farm job.

The writing style is humorous and all-business. Easy to follow and practical to implement.

His methods for gates and using insulators on end posts paid for the book 50 times over.

    Can't recommend highly enough.

Excellent Book, A Must Have for GraziersI would recommend Ranching Like A 12-Year-Old to anyone involved with grazing livestock. Tom clearly and persuasively lays out the method of and motivation for his is grazing management. The motivation is to produce as much high quality forage as possible, both during the growing season and to stockpile for winter grazing. The method he describes with enough details to give you confidence to do it yourself and without overwhelming you with too much information. Having spent my last three years managing cattle with good-but-not-great results, I am excited to use Ranching Like A 12-Year-Old as a practical guide to improving our farm.

This one is a keeper.I received this book for a birthday present and was surprised that it was written by a friend’s husband.

I was amazed at the relatable characters that the author described.
My family is second generation German and Polish. My Grandfather was a German/English translator in the First World War and my in-laws were Polish/Ukrainian Canadians.

Having lived in Europe in the post Second World War era, I had heard a lot of stories, but even with having a German/American mother I’d heard nothing of the event described in this book.

Germans after the war were hated, so many were tight lipped.
The author’s account of displaced ethnic German people after WW2 was eye opening.

I love historical fiction. This book opened my eyes to untold stories that need to be told as beautifully as the author, AJ Gurba has done.

I read and love to recommend great books.
    This one is a keeper.

View from the VerandaThis is a very well written book that shows the resiliency of a rural German family facing the atrocities of war. Based on a true story, I had a desire to follow each of the characters during this time of uncertainties, and especially the father who needed to decide of the next step to take to survive until the end of the book. German Nazis, Communist Russians and Polish all showed up with their evil spirits, but dignity, and honor are still well alive today through the survivors of this valuable family.

Incredibly tragic yet uplifting and inspirationalThe author invites the reader to meet and appreciate each character for who they are, falling immediately in love with some and feeling immediate contempt for others. How everyday farm life was appreciated for just that and how respect for one’s fellow mankind was shown, love and support without judgment or condemnation when of different nationalities or religions. This novel allows the reader to feel what these innocent families had genuinely experienced in a time and place where survival from one day to the next was not guaranteed, when the fate of loved ones was unknown. This is a family’s story of how faith love and strength was the only choice. I would love to read a sequel of what else lied ahead in the lives of these incredible people who were part of this incredible story.

View from the VerandaAn incredible story. A must read for anyone interested in second world war history. The book is a real life portrayal of the hardships experienced by a rural family during the Nazi regime. Little is said about this dark side of the war. A true testament to those who endured and survived.

Very well written and as many have said, "difficult to put down". In fact I am reading it for a second time.

View from the verandaLike all good stories, the “View from the Veranda” simply drew me in with each turn of the page. I found this book to be extremely well written and Gurba did a masterful job of combining the facts with fiction. With the introduction of each character I found myself wanting to immediately follow up with each of them (hoping they would be okay) in hopes that they might possibly survive such a desperate situation.
The factual information laid out in the book was extremely enlightening and combined with the “story telling” aspect it simply was hard to put down.

Our Collective Contribution to the Decadence in NigeriaAuthor: Christine Umoekereka.
Interesting and easy to read for all ages. A must read for all Nigerians both at home and in diaspora. The book sheds some lights on how our motherland, literally flowing with milk and honey: oil and gas, gold, iron ore, Bitumen, lead and zinc, coal etc in different regions of the country, has turned into a land of total chaos, insecurity and poverty. Some might disagree with the 'no blame' tone of the book as we are all aware of the heightened level of corruption of our leaders. We however have the opportunity to choose a new direction via upcoming elections. Security is paramount and the least a government should provide for its citizenry, this is currently eluding us in Nigeria!! We all have to wake-up and do right by our country. Kudos to Mrs Umoekereka for writing this book.

Our collective contribution to the decadence in nigeriaThis is a very heartfelt, indepth revelation of Christine's values. It is so very easy for society to become blasé, complaining about everything wrong but laying the blame elsewhere and absolving oneself of responsibility saying "someone should do something about....". Christine's obvious research is very detailed in relating the history of the problems. However as a true ambassador of change she takes total responsibilty. Change can't and doesn't happen at a distance, one can only change oneself by true introspection, analysis, and most critically ownership of a problem - then be willing to effect the necessary change BUT only if and when concrete alternatives to the current staus quo are offered. This is what speaks to me so clearly in her book but more importantly the absolute necessity of unity, brotherhood and universal charity. This excellent work could and should be a wake-up call not only to her fellow Nigerians but to every individual in every country in the world before its simply too late to set us all on the right course. Thank you Christine!! How many people sit in their own little world, discrying the evolution of our society today from former values but feeilng helpless to effect changes? Christine has shone a light in the darkness of our world today. BRAVO!!
    Beth

A Story for our TimesMy parents were children in Holland and Germany during WWII. and they told me their stories because "history must not repeat itself." But as we all know, it does. And it is important for these stories to be told, especially to those who do not have family that lived through war-ravaged times.

This book evocatively brings one of those stories to light, a story of one family but that speaks for millions of families. War is not only about the soldiers but the civilians who must live through the anarchy, the deprivation and starvation, the powerlessness.

But "View from the Veranda" also celebrates the humanity, the good in us, the selflessness that gives people hope in a hopeless time. That is important.

Gurba writes with authenticity, never overly morbid or sensational, but conveying the human tragedy with dignity and compassion.

    I highly recommend this book.

Page turner !!Sometimes a great book was never intended for the masses, and in this case, it would be a shame if it were not more widely read. For now, this can be our little secret, an inspiring insight into Europe throughout the Nazi and Russian conflagrations. The family story is told with a love and appreciation for cultural details that only comes from the stories handed down through generations. Thank you Alex!

Stirring Family HistoryThe “View from the Veranda” by A. J. Gurba, is an interesting compilation of family stories and an informative and enjoyable read. I couldn’t put it down.
One of the family members didn’t feel that the stories were anything special, because millions of people had similar stories. However, those stories portraying how world events impacted common citizens caught up in the heart of those world events hasn’t been adequately told.
These stories should be read by people of this day and age; particularly those of us who live in the West, where most of us have never known the tragedies and hardships a family faces when war rolls over their homes, and governments and government policies change. They highlight the need to strive to attain and maintain basic freedoms that many today take for granted, while others are actively trying to destroy them. It also highlights how people of character retain their humanity during extremely difficult times and the importance of relationships with family and friends.
Mr. Gurba is a gifted writer. He’s done a fantastic job creating this historical, true-story based, novel. The dialogue he created added immensely to the basics of the stories and his descriptions of time and place were excellent.

View from the VerandaI was hooked as soon as I started reading the book and could not put it down. It is a touching wonderful mixture of humor at times, history, and accounts of what a German farming family had to endure in order to survive not only the Nazis but the Russians during WW11. It a compelling historical novel, easy reading and well worth the read. I thoroughly enjoyed every description and story and wanted more at the conclusion of the book. LOVED IT!!!!

Very Informative & HelpfulAlthough I have not been personally impacted by physical or mental abuse in my own experience, I found it to be extremely informative and helpful when dealing with family members who have, or potentially could enter into an abusive relationship.

Shaunda-lee tells it like it is and pulls no punches when warning young women to be on high alert if and when they begin to see the, often not-so-obvious, signs of a wolf in sheep's clothing.

The Fifth ColumnOnce I began reading and considering all that is being said (knowing all that I know of Martin Hattersley) - the fact that he is both lawyer and priest, having personally received excellent legal help from him, confirming his intimate knowledge and commitment to the less fortunate and incarcerated in our society, witnessing the considerate and tempered good sense that appears on these pages… all this I am thankful for. It occurred to me that I have a wonderful, intimate and unique gift in my hands that need not be just another political opinion amongst many. I have here a documented book that my own life’s details endorses since we came to know Martin through our friendship with his eldest daughter.

campfire bedtime storiesCampfire Bedtime Stories is great for sitting around the fire or for snuggling up with your little ones under the covers at home!

Lisa Rudkin's animated stories are both fun and lovable! I know my two little cousins loved it when they were shown the cute animations but also enjoyed the wacky stories!

campfire bedtime storiesI work with Lisa and she gave me her book last year. I also attended her reading at the High Prairie Library.

Her book is very well written and my grand-kids love the coloured pictures. When I saw her act out the Kissy Fishy story, I knew then how I should tell the story to my grand-kids.

She really enjoys being around the kids and they seem to love her. The kids get tickled and bounced back and forth as she acts out the kids riding the horses.

They also each children in a fun way about morals and manners. I do recommend this book to any parent or grandparents.

campfire bedtime storiesLast year she had a book reading and a lot of friends and family came to it. It was a slumber party at the High Prairie Library with about 40 kids there.

It went pretty good. I never Lisa could write and tell stories, it was a great night. The kid's loved her. She had them all acting out the different stories.

She had two children one on each leg bouncing and tossing them around like they were really riding horses; they got tickled and there was a lot of laughing kids having fun.

All the kids wanted to get involved, she is great with kids. Her stories teach kids in a fun way about manners, they have a moral to all of them.

I gave the book to my lil nephew. The colourful illustrations are very well done too. I would recommend this book to all families.

    Karen October 2019Promises....promises...

The Promise in The Void is a remarkable book, covering two continents, and a number of human emotions and struggles following WWII, including loss of a homeland, and insecurities and hardships while struggling to establish a new life and new friends in a strange country. There are disconnections throughout the book, and the characters must learn how to deal with, and live with, PTSD, as a result of battle fatigue. This is a book about romance – not only romance between a man and a woman, but romance of a young family in a new country.

The title itself lends to a wonderment about the fulfillment of this promise. Perhaps the void is referring to the vast distant prairies which, on first glance, do not offer much of a promise for a future with a young family. Will this couple rise to the challenge, and keep their family together through thick and thin?

A good imagination and a box of kleenexes all combine to make this a very satisfying read.

Learn to TeachI love this book enough to actually go and find it and write a review about it.

I feel like that should say enough, but for more:

The author actually taught teachers in his life, he has a great view about how people act and react, why they are the way they are and how you can understand that to help you get your point across to them easier.

Simple message for tough timesWhile it's unfortunate this message is needed today, I'm glad this book can provide a potentially life saving message to our most vulnerable demographic.

The Author does a wonderful job presenting what is taught to adults in a manner respectful of a child's understanding of the world and the threat itself.

The fact a more than qualified person wrote the material, only lends credibility and comfort to whomever purchases this book.

Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and purchase this book. Take the time to read it with them and explain it's message. I know my nephews will be better off for it!

Primal Power The Unripe Apple was given to me at my mother's memorial. I loved fantasy movies, but a book in that genre had never been my choice. Major changes were happening in my life and I needed an escape so I gave it a try. To my surprise I couldn't put it down! The book had mystery, magic, fear, love, friendship, joy, strength, courage, and I loved it! It seems laced with pearls of wisdom and I find myself rereading parts of it and always finding more insights. The characters within this book resonated with the strength within my own soul and have given me the courage to move forward, thank-you!

No one, especially a young child should have to deal with the consequences of an accidental gun shot. At nine years old, the author of this well written memoir was robbed of a youth, most of us take for granted.
Hospitalized miles from family and their farm, she woke and was told because of a severed spinal cord she would never walk again.
This is an inspiring story of determination and bravery, and how they shaped her as a person.
How she never gave up on her dream to own horses, ride, and to live on a farm again. How her love and ability for training dogs enhanced her life with many special companions that also served a purpose.
Reading this proves animals can make life worth living.

I could literally hear him telling the story only the way Walter can, exception speaker! I thought this man over came this battle , my battle is with cancer, if he can do this I can surely overcome my battle through prayer! God is always with us even when we feel he is not! It's been said that life is a journey and that there is a ‘road’ each of us must travel. Why that road seems to be darker and harder for some is something we may never fully understand. Walter has been on a challenging road. In this book “Sovereign Child” Walter openly shares his experience, and as he discovered for himself, there is a light at the end of that tunnel! That, in spite of the pain we have been through in the past, there is hope for tomorrow, and that we can step into that hope today!

If you have opportunity to meet Walter and get to know him, you will begin to appreciate the truth of the words found in Romans 8:28 - “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (NIV)

Walter has found his purpose. Once a ‘prisoner’ of the past, he’s been released in new freedom through the transformative grace and power of Jesus Christ. Thank you Walter for sharing this story - your story of inspiration and hope.

"Promise in the Void", is a novel that I very much looked forward to read, especially when Rebekah had told me about the journey she had after receiving the instruction to publish it.
Although not a "war bride "per se, I found many aspects of the story, similar to being a "settler on the prairies" myself. Settling down in a culture with its customs and norms which are very different, but in some ways, very similar. More so, it taught me to trust and appreciate "the hand of support and friendship". Coping with all the challenges and joyous moments that a farm brings - total reliance on God and coping with extreme weather conditions, working hard to provide for the animals for the upcoming Winter. As the wife of an x-soldier, it also confirms and explains the emotional aftermath and scars of a war on soldiers, but overcoming it and healing over time and much love. The novel is well written, as it kept me intrigued from the beginning until the end. I highly recommend this novel to all. I’m sure it will also bring back fond memories to second and third generation “immigrants.”

Wow... what an amazing story! Eunice leaves herself vulnerable to the reader by exposing the darkest depths of her life. She uses her testimony to encourage and uplift others with the assurance that God is ever patient and always waiting to pick up the broken pieces and heal you. Eunice's story is a wonderful mix of testimony, Scripture references, and life lessons along the way. I highly recommend this book to anyone whose life seems to be falling apart, who is seeking for answers as to why things always seem wrong. As her book clearly states, you will discover that for every pain there's a purpose. As she takes you along on her journey through the pages, you will undoubtedly travel your own life journey realizing that you - as she is - are "Broken But Blessed."

If you want Raw Real Truth, Walter has given it to the world in its fullest. Knowing Walter as Mr. T a teacher ( my favorite teacher) I would have never known or guessed the harsh brutal torturous situations he was put through his entire life.
He was nothing but a positive inspiration to me the day I met him. I was very intrigued to learn more about this power soulful man I looked up to and to be honest his story did not fall short of amazing .
I was captivated each page as the chapters continued. I felt sadness, anger, despair, abuse, loneliness, abandonment and for a very short moment happiness fill with the Holy Spirit and all God has to offer his children .
His words were real and naked there was no sugar coating of the truth, no embarrassment in the story to hide details. It's the true trials and tribulations of a solider who found his creator and I could not be more proud of any person willing to open the doors of there demons to the world ! In that is honor and love .
So much of what we learn about love is taught from people who never really loved us and this is what I see in this wonderful man. Wisdom and knowledge willing to share and help anyone willing to listen and open the door to Gods beauty.
If you tell the truth it becomes apart of your past, if you lie/hide it becomes apart of your future - freedom is all I see for Walters future and this book will save many people and open many eyes to the beauty of honesty and love in God.
I have and will continue to share this book with whom ever can read it's a life story that needs to be shared . Amen for Gods grace. 5 stars hands down .

This was a book that I couldn't put down. I read it from cover to cover in one sitting. I was riveted and heartbroken at all the abuse faced by a young Walter. I was saddened at how he at times tried to cope with all the heartache, albeit unhealthy ways. But I cried rejoicing tears at God's handiwork, He never let go of Walter! Very thankful for Walter to have the obedience to write this most painful recount of his past, it will truly help many people dealing with an abusive past, heartache and despair. God is good! There is no denying His existence when you read this book. I pray for all people who read this book and need healing from such horrors of life. a real rags to richesIt is truly remarkable to read a story of redemption like this one. A story that is wrought with despair and hopelessness, amongst horrible abuse, and ends with hope, healing and adoption into the royalty of the King of Glory. We have known Walter from his time in St. Paul and I read the book just before he came and spoke at our church. What a difference an encounter with "the King" can make in a person's life. While reading I could tell that there was a big difference after His encounter at the healing service that day. In person, the evidence is astounding. Way to go Jesus! Keep your eyes on your King, Walter.

Mind-blowingI've known Walter for a few years now. I was excited to read his book; we've talked and I knew some of his story. But this... nothing prepares you for reading this. If it was a journey to read (and it was!) I can't even imagine what it was to actually live. As his friend, reading this had a deep impact on me. Anger at what was done to him, sadness for what he did to himself, yet praise for what God did for him and what I expect God to do through him. Walter is indeed living proof of Psalm 40:2: "He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand."

For those struggling with identity, with addiction, with loneliness, with depression, you need to read this book. This is not only one man's testimony of his life, it is a testament to the abundant grace of God that He pours out LIBERALLY to those who earnestly seek Him. If you want answers to life's questions and solutions to life's problems, the Bible is the way to get them and if you're not convinced, read Walter's story. For any skeptic who thinks "there isn't a God," you need to read this book. For anyone who thinks "God doesn't care about me," you need to read this book. It will not only change your mind, it can be the doorway that leads to restoration and transformation through a relationship with Jesus Christ. It will take the blinders off your eyes so you can actually SEE truth around you, and once you see truth, as Walter describes in his own journey, you can walk the path of truth to its ultimate and purposeful end: eternal relationship with Jesus Christ.

I so appreciate that Walter not only had the guts to share his story, but that he was obedient when God asked him to write it. I cannot even conceive of how hard it was to write, nevermind live through. If you need more proof of the redeeming and sustaining power of Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit, this book provides it.

CourageI have known Walter for over 20 years, when I met him, he was hilarious, always the clown but professional when he had to be. We worked together for about 5 years in Alberta and then life happens and people lose a bit of touch, luckily through facebook we were still able to chat once in awhile. Through facebook I could tell in the last 10-15 years there was some deep stuff going on within him...... but being so far away I would never know the truth or extent of it till the birth of his book, " The Soverign Child".

Wow, how does one person live to tell of this horrific upbringing and then turn into such a Stellar Individual....... I asked him..... GOD, he said. Although I am not a deeply religious person, I truly believe that if Walter and God would have not found each other, he would not be the guy he is today.
When I started reading this book, it didn't go down till I was done...... you just can't put it down, just when you think it can't get any worse for him .... it does....

    So raw and well written......

MiraculousWhile Sovereign Child is a factual account of one man’s journey and discovery, the story is so incredible that it often reads like a fictional novel. It’s gritty, extremely intense, raw and emotional. How one man could have endured so much yet came through it all perfectly whole and perfectly healed can only be described in one word….miraculous. The book is an amazing read, and perfectly reveals the love God has for his child Walter and the love God has for EACH of us.

MiraculousHow else can you describe the transformation that occurred in Walter's life. Not only was in hard to fathom theincredible difficulties that he experienced through his lifetime, but it is almost incomprehensible to imagine how he could recover when "dealt such a difficult hand". Sovereign Child is a story of heartbreak and despair but also of freedom and inspiration. As you turn the pages you keep thinking "how much more can one person handle". Then by God's grace the narrative changes dramatically and the reader is captivated by one of the most miraculous endings that you can imagine. You may experience tears, you may experience anger but all will experience exhilaration as Walter's story concludes. This is a story our world needs to hear.

Brave!Writing this book must have been an incredibly hard (yet incredibly brave!) thing for Walter to do. It was sad, joyful, terrible and uplifting..... It shows that nothing is too big for our God! I've known Walter for years and the best part was that I could hear his voice in my head while reading; his personality definitely shines through!

I know that God will use Walter's testimony to help others, to be transformed in the same miraculous way that God changed his life..... I know that God right now is saying to him, "well done, my good and faithful servant."

The Kingdom of Thrim is a wonderful children's story that teaches the lesson of what happens when we don't consult God before making decisions. The main character, Yoj is a happy and loved man in his town who makes dolls. One day, a stranger comes into town and gives Yoj the opportunity to make more money than what he was making. Without consulting God, friends or family Yoj jumps at the chance and follows the stranger. He is taken from his beautiful and colorful world into a dark and gray world. It is here he realizes what he left behind and how much more important his joy, friends and relationships are than money.

There is such an important lesson here for both adults and children. The illustrations are gorgeous, and the author is also the illustrator! There are even activities included to do with your child after reading the book like making your own Kingdom of Thrim out of Lego and even sock puppets! My sons who are 4 and 6 years old enjoyed the story very much. I would highly recommend this book! It is a wonderful family read. I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

“Michael Wiens has written a passionate, comprehensive, engaging account of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird and how to attract these fascinating birds into your yard. Wiens masterfully employs the language of the streets, where baby Hummingbirds are described as featherless "flying meatballs," a certain mangy looking Hummingbird is painted as something that looks like "a neighborhood cat coughed up," the mating ritual leads the female to fall "beak over tail feathers" in love, and juvenile Hummingbirds are depicted as racing from flower to flower as though "they have a serious case of ADD." Descriptions like these and others will entertain, amuse and have you smiling as you learn everything you need to know about the Ruby-throated Hummingbird and how to make them a guest in your own garden. Jewel of the North by Michael Wiens represents nature as it was meant to be experienced—raw, gritty and oozing with passion.”—Wolfgang Carstens

This is an intriguing memoir, written through the eyes of a young girl who lived in Germany during the years from 1939 to 1948. Seldom have we had a child’s perspective on how war came unexpectedly to her person and her family. Not only does this perspective fit a current literary niche, but this slim volume of 109 pages also holds the reader’s attention from beginning to end. This is a “must read” book!
The narration begins with a family that lives in Dusseldorf, and spends a couple of summers camping outside the city, where Inge and her siblings explore, build sand castles and pick flowers- idyllic scenes. Descriptions are vivid and colourful: “ Ever since then I have loved the moaning sound of foghorns. It invokes in me memories of long summers on the banks of the river Rhine. Today had been one of those glorious sunny days of my early childhood, the memory of which has stayed with me all my life.” And suddenly, the beauty of nature, the bliss of childhood, is changed when war is declared. How do children deal with war? What does war even mean to a little girl whose life until that point was secure, has been joyful and adventurous? This is a story about a family impacted by world events that changed their lives in a very dramatic way.
We Were Children is written by the youngest child in that family: through her eyes,we experience how a German family with four children is drawn into a world war they did not start, but had to survive with strength, perseverance and inventiveness. The love and determination of Inge’s parents to protect their children in turbulent times, makes this a universal story. War and violence, which are politically motivated, affect innocent families on both sides of conflict : it is they who are the “collateral damage” of indiscriminate violence. In telling the story, a statement is made and a witness is given on this theme, yet it is told with clarity, careful attention to detail; with wit that shows the personality of the author. in describing personal behaviours and responses to the world she lived in, Inge has both a poetic style of writing and a wonderful command of language.

Another lovely series of short "bedtime stories" by Mr. Faltin. This one will keep you up long past your bedtime! What I loved most about this book was how it draws YOU into the narrative, by using the term 'you', and close descriptions of the world of the story. It really does feel that you are part of this world of Bobo and family. The dog characters are among my favorites in the series, as the anecdotes remind all of us dog-owners about our special memories with our pets: running after strange and mysterious 'things in the woods', eating everything they shouldn't, and generally getting up to all kinds of mischief! My husband and I have had a lot of fun reading through the series, and intend to get more than one copy to give to nephews and nieces for birthdays and Christmas presents. Better make it Christmas: this is great source of enchantment set in the Canadian "winter wonderland"!

Munchkin, Pumpkin, Bobo...say what you like about Mr. Faltin's great series of short, canine-centric stories, but he sure knows how to name a dog! This is my third review of his books, because I really think he deserves a written-out look at his work, such as I can provide. Bobo Gets a Big Surprise was probably my favorite of the series, both because it talks about Faltin's family in a closer way, that really makes us fall in love with the family dynamics (and doggy dynamics too!), and because it weaves the world of the dogs and the world of the humans into two seemingly parallel worlds. The dogs are always scampering off, living their own lives encountering the flora and fauna of the Canadian tundra, while the humans work on practical concerns involving family and the property (let's just say the cabin is not quite invincible). Congrats to Faltin for working through this personal and yet universal series of tales about the lives of real Canadians. And for Pete's sake, buy yourself a copy: are you a Canadian or what? 🙂

My husband bought me all three of these for my birthday this year, and I thought I'd make some quick reviews for each. Bobo and the Wolf is a great little series of tales about the author's dogs, and family, in the Canadian woods. There are lots of memorable stories here, and I particularly liked the references to other books ("Maybe you already heard the story called Bobo’s Cabin, and maybe you did not..."). The frequent use of photographs help to tell the stories, introducing us to the characters in a very immediate and welcoming way. The best word for this book is "charming". It doesn't have the moralizing nonsense of many similar stories, but instead immerses you in a rustic world where everything is snow, (over-)excited dogs, and family. Truly Canadian!

It is a story about how when we fall into tough times, we must stay strong and continue to move forward - fighting and never giving up. It is a story about the love of a mother for her son. I am certain i would not have recovered as well as i did, or possibly have survived, without that love. It is a story that exemplifies a society so wrought up in external appearances, we sometimes forgot that these people are just human beings, and compassion can go a long way. Finally, it is a story about a higher power, or whatever you want to call it, who will help even the lowest of the low because of its divine love.
