Sefaa’s 6th birthday is fast approaching. Plans for her birthday party are underway. After listening to one of Grandpa’s nighttime stories, she decided to have a Kente-themed birthday party.
Yaa Serwaa Somuah is a writer and a speaker. She is a trained teacher with a Bachelors of Education from the University of Education, Ghana. She is currently living and working in Alberta, Canada. Yaa arrived in Edmonton in the spring of 2008. She has worked with many families in Edmonton. She volunteers her talents for many organizations such as The Afrikan History Library Project, The African Centre of Edmonton, Sinkunia Community Development Organization, Historica-Dominion Institute, as well as many churches in the city and in her home country Ghana.
In her spare time she has self published two books and many poems which she uses to support children focused Organizations. She is currently working on many of the children stories she has created.
In 2011 Yaa opened a preparatory school (NANA SOMUAH ROYAL ACADEMY) in her village, Ntronang in the Eastern part of Ghana. The number of students in the school has grown to a hundred and twenty and still growing. The focus of these stories is to raise money for the school. Through her volunteer work with Historica-Dominion Institute, she speaks in many schools and Universities in the city of Edmonton all year round.
