The historic Bridgeland and Riverside districts of Calgary have long been associated with the resilient and remarkable culture of western Canada’s Germans from Russia. Nestled along the Bow River east of the downtown, the residents of this community have long contributed to the vibrancy of Alberta’s premier city. Through years of extensive research involving interviews with first- and second-generation Volga Germans and visits to private and public archives in Canada and around the world, Marlene Michel has compiled an incredibly enriching sampler of Calgary Volga German history and folklore richly illustrated with photographs, maps, and original documents.
