Mother wasn’t born a witch. Before, she was known as Hilde: the poor semi-delinquent daughter of a brokeman. Times were dark. Work was scarce, sickness crawled through the housing blocks and flora-born, bloodthirsty creatures came down from the angelgrass to drink and eat of the townspeople.
In present time, Cornflower is forced back to school and into the reach of their sadistic schoolmates. Alienated from Mother and in search of answers, Cornflower finds them-self more and more in the company of the bog boys. They also make an unlikely friend in Colt, the transfer student, who may understand more about the Gulch than he lets on.
