Your Honour by Pat Goddard is the story of Percy Marshall, lawyer, judge, husband, father, and community leader, and his challenges and accomplishments, which spanned decades of change in Alberta, a province he dearly loved.
Excerpt from Your Honour by Pat Goddard:
โIn 1956, Percy joined Gordon Embury to form Embury and Marshall in a practice on Whyte Avenue in Edmonton. It was a partnership that lasted nearly 20 years, and a sharp contrast to his earlier experience working with Don Cormie at Cormie Kennedy for the monthly salary of $225.00 per month.
Percy left soon after Christmas after Don Cormie had announced that he couldnโt decide whether to give his legal staff a $50.00 bonus for Christmas or increase their salary by $5.00 per month. Cormieโs attempt at generosity fell flat. Percy took a risk and left Cormie Kennedy to join Embury. It was a serious risk for a young lawyer with a wife and two small children to support, but a risk that eventually worked to his advantage.
During the years working with Gordon Embury, Percy honed his skills in the courtroom defending clients as Gordon Embury wouldnโt, for some unknown reason, go to court.
During this time, the family lived in the Goldbar area of Edmonton where he attended St. Augustine of Canterbury Anglican Church serving in a range of capacities, including several years on the Vestry.โ
