Excerpt from A Glance Back by Keith Brower:
“Arch and Earl met us in Olds and the next day Earl and I left with team and wagon of effects for the ranch some 18 miles S.W. of town.
It had thawed some during the day (this was about the 17th of November) but froze enough by 9 p.m. that our unshod team couldn’t make the little hill where the trail crossed the coulee near home so we just blocked the wagon on the hill and finished the trip on foot.
The old folks were fine, dad having recovered from a serious attack of rheumatic fever a short time before. The cattle came through fine but were a little tired and thin after the long trip.
Earl and I soon left on a hunting trip west to the Big Red Deer country but were not successful in locating any big game, however we dig bag a good bunch of chicken on the way back.
We camped at night on a little spring creek S.W. of Westward Ho and dressed the birds. On the way out we picked up a quart bottle (white glass) that proved to be very lucky.
Earl had been very careful to put the lantern globe in the bedding roll when we packed our outfit, but when he shook the blankets out, not thinking about the globe, it was smashed, and that’s where the bottle came in handy for a lantern globe, for it was an easy matter to dampen a string in the oil and wrap it around the bottle where it was to be broken and set it afire, for when dipped in water the bottle broke cleanly, so we had a lantern globe.”
