Excerpt from Brief Candle, Splendid Torch by Elizabeth Marie Rolfe and edited by Leslie Sawchenko:

Does he want to kill me?

In his drunken state, I’m sure he did! Intense pain engulfed my body, but the words he hurled at me struck even deeper and hurt more. “You’re to blame for it all,” he yelled, adding a long string of vulgar profanity. To blame for what? I didn’t know! Did I honestly deserve his acts of violence.

His anger was straight from the pit of hell hidden inside his tormented mind. What a mean, heartless man he was, and not once in my whole life, had I, or would I ever, be able to relate to him as father.

It was true, my father’s cruel intentions towards me pulled me down and under as surely as the undercurrent in the raging river water below. There wasn’t a chance I could live a normal life around him. I had to get away.

And it better be as far as the East is from the West! I not only feared and loathed him, but I was ashamed of him.

His reputation as the town drunk was known by all. Yet we did have one thing in common, didn’t we? The two of us hate each other’s guts! That was the plain truth of the matter.”
