Built 1932-33, the iconic tower stands in Pioneer Park at the summit of Telegraph Hill. It was created through the bequest of Lilli Hitchcock Coit* and dedicated to San FranciscoÂ’s volunteer firemen who had lost their lives in the line of duty.

* (Just fun info) No relation to Wild Bill. Coit left one-third of her [substantial] estate to the City of San Francisco “to be expended in an appropriate manner for the purpose of adding to the beauty of the city which I have always loved.”
