Inspired by the Stations of the Cross of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Spruce Grove, Alberta, Listening to Jesus: The Stations of the Cross by Pastor Glen Carlson provides us with powerful meditations on each of the stations.

Listening to Jesus: The Stations of the Cross is book 8 in the “Listening to Jesus” series by Glen S. R. Carlson.

Listening to Jesus is particularly:

  • A healing form of prayer, where henceforth, your expectations come from Jesus rather than from yourself. Above all, in listening, you receive a personal message – for Jesus is always whispering to you.
  • An art form of prayer that brings out your creativity and draws you into the presence of Jesus.

It therefore allows the Holy Spirit to work through you, as you read the Scriptures, to discover the treasures that are in the written Word of God.

Moreover, once discovered, this art becomes a way of life as you journey with Jesus on your own road to Emmaus.

You soon discover your eyes are opened and life becomes a communion with Jesus as you break bread (the Word) together.

Excerpt from Listening to Jesus: The Stations of the Cross by Glen S. R. Carlson:

“Since Lent is a penitential season of preparation for Easter, the Station of the Cross, which follows the path of Christ from Pontius Pilate’s praetorium to Christ’s tomb, has been a popular devotion in churches.

In the sixteenth century, this pathway was officially titled the “Via Dolorosa” (Sorrowful Way) or simply Way of the Cross or Stations of the Cross.

After Constantine legalized Christianity in the year 312, this pathway was marked with its important stations.

St. Jerome (342–420), living in Bethlehem during the latter part of his life, attested to crowds of pilgrims from various countries who visited those holy places and followed the Way of the Cross”

Review:

We can walk with Jesus for ourselves—to seek a more faithful response to Him in our own lives. Or we can walk with Him in interceding for someone else.

Additionally, because Jesus walked this walk for all of us and because all Christians are called to take up our own cross and follow Him, this is where we can meet each other at our most authentic level.

Pastor Carlson’s meditations find the common ground held by all disciples of Jesus and draw us into the truest unity of all—the unity of cross-bearers”
