Adam’s Journey by Adam William Germain is a classic “rags to riches” autobiographical story. Will determination help the author beat the odds against him?

What made Adam run? A poor boy raised in a single parent home, on the wrong side of the tracks, would seem to have the dice loaded against him.

Adam’s Journey shows how determination, intelligence, and a gift for the gab, combined with a rare understanding of ordinary people and compassion for them, can take you a long, long way in today’s Canada.

Excerpt from Adam’s Journey: A Struggle for Survival in a Hostile Land by Adam William Germain:

“When we rolled into Regina in the summer of 1958, I had just turned 10. I sure felt grown up. After all, I had completed Grade 3, left my first girlfriend back in Yorkton, and here I was with my dad and my sisters, a couple of bags, and a couple suitcases riding the bus. The trip from Yorkton to Regina clattered along, in an older bus at slower speeds, fulfilling the CCF [later NDP] government’s mandate if not a chicken in every pot, at least a bus stop in every town.

Our furniture would arrive later! As meager as it was, Dad nevertheless arranged to ship it by train, and we would pick it up at the train station. We had no vehicle, so how we were going to pick it up was a problem not yet confronted by Dad; but pick it up we would.

Regina, with its then population of about 55,000 people, seemed shiny and mysterious; its lights radiating across the prairie with nothing but one’s imagination to block them. From a distance, like a prairie mecca, we could see our new home glowing on the horizon.”
