SYNOPSIS of “THE AFRICAN IMMIGRANT”by Mengangacha Mencha:
In the beginning,
Chalker lived a mediocre life while making a great fortune, however later decided to travel abroad. Little did she know that her lifestyle would change from average to poor and homeless.
Along the way,
She goes from a professional to a cleaner, cleaning public washrooms and metro subways to survive. Professional jobs were far from her reach, causing her to be entangled by frustration and disorientation.
Consequently, she was left with no choice but to look for any type of job to survive. When she did find a job, it was either a temporal or a casual job, e.g. a night watch girl, a floor cleaner and a factory and assemble line worker.
There were no employment benefits, allowances nor health and economic security of any kind in these jobs available to her. They were jobs that left her miserable and sick. These devastating circumstances led her to:
accumulate credit card debts
have outstanding school fees and loans
become homelessness
become physically and emotionally sick
At some point, she becomes tempted to return to her country of origin within the African continent. However, the idea is languished and watered down because the land she thought she once lived in had been ravaged and shattered with wars and socio-economic downturn.
In the end,
Chalker is left with no choice but to live with the choices and mistakes made in her past. At the same time hoping that others coming behind her look before they leap.
In this intriguing story called “THE AFRICAN IMMIGRANT,” follow Chalker has she desperately attempts to not only thrive but in fact, survive in her new home.
